WHAT IS LAMPWORKING?
Lampworking is the ancient art of creating a bead by melting glass over an oil lamp-
hence the term lampworking.
Today the process is accomplished by using a torch-mine is a surface mixture of
oxygen and propane. The glass rod is heated with the torch until molten and then
wrapped around a mandrel coated with bead release. By adding other colors and
methods of decorations the possibilities are endless. In order for the bead to cool
without cracking it is placed in a digitally controlled kiln to soak and cool slowly
WHAT IS PMC-PRECIOUS METAL CLAY?
PMC consists of three ingredients-an organic binder, water and pure metal particles-
gold or silver. It is a pliable material the consistency of modeling clay. You can manipulate
it like other clays-roll it out, mold it, pierce it, cut, tear, join and assemble pieces together,
texturize and fire it. When it is fired in a kiln at a high temperature the organic binder burns away and the metal particles fuse becoming pure silver or gold. After firing the object it can be treated like any other silver or gold-soldered, burnished, buffed and
tumbled. The possibilities for unique and beautiful jewelry pieces are endless. This is a
very exciting medium to work with.
WHAT ARE FRITS?
Frits are small particles of colored glass, the semi molten bead is rolled in the frit and it is melted into the bead creating a multi-colored background.
WHAT ARE GLASS PRESSES?
Glass presses are tools used to press semi molten glass into a particular shape for consistent size and uniformity, such as lentils tabs, pillows, buttons, etc.
WHAT SIZE MANDRELS ARE USED?
I use 1/16" mandrels for my beads unless otherwise stated.
